ISTANBUL — For centuries, the history of the Ottoman Empire has been painted in strokes of gold and crimson—a saga of conquering sultans, elite Janissaries, and the mysterious, secluded world of the Harem. To the outside world, the lives of Ottoman princesses, the daughters of the Padishah, appeared to be the pinnacle of luxury and privilege. They were the envy of Europe, draped in silks and pearls, their futures secured by marriages to the empire’s most powerful Pashas.

But a scream that tore through the marble corridors of Topkapi Palace on a spring dawn in 1623 tells a different story.

It was the scream of Princess Fatma Sultan, the 15-year-old daughter of Sultan Ahmed I and the formidable Kösem Sultan. For six hundred years, that cry was silenced, buried under official chronicles that listed her merely as a pious wife and mother. Now, however, explosive new evidence has shattered the silence.

The Discovery That Rewrites History
