Story that talks about love, talks about betrayal, talks about forgiveness, talks about patience and a whole lot of lesson that is packed into the story. My client is not asking this court to punish the respondent. He’s asking for what every Nigerian father is entitled to. The opportunity to know his child. Your Honor, section 14(2)(b) of the Child Rights Act clearly establishes that a child has a right to parental care, protection, and maintenance.

 That right belongs to both parents, not one. Both. The respondent deliberately concealed the existence of this child for years. My client was denied the chance to provide support. He was denied the chance to be a father. >> Objection, Your Honor. >> On what grounds? >> Because my learned colleague is speaking as though children are documents, as though parenthood begins and ends with biology, Your Honor.

Who carried that child for 9 months? [music] Who suffered through labor? Who stayed awake when the child had fever? Who sacrificed career opportunities? My client’s [music] entire life became that child. >> Objection, Your Honor. >> Overruled. Proceed. >> And now a man appears years later. Not because he raised the child.

 Not because he protected the child. >> Affidavit exists. [music] >> And we are expected to hand over custody? >> With respect, Your Honor. My learned colleague keeps speaking about feelings. The law deals with rights. >> And rights are exercised by human beings, not robots. >> Counsel, the Nigerian Constitution under section 17 recognizes the protection of family life. A father is not disposable.

 A mother cannot unilaterally erase a parent because she believes she knows best. Counsel, proceed with caution. >> And what happens when the child is emotionally attached to the mother? What happens when separating them causes trauma? What happens when a child sees a stranger and is told that is your father? >> Then perhaps the real question is who created that situation.
